Scriptures and teachers advise people to have compassion, maintain peace, speak the truth, and control anger. We all try to follow this, but more often than not, fail, get confused, frustrated and avoid this path. It is like the Kaurava prince, Duryodhana telling Krishna, “I know what is righteous but can’t do it; I also know what is non-righteous but can’t leave it”.
Holistic Science seeks to present a new, ‘science’. Can we change effects and results without changing causes? Can we change the fruits or do we need to change the seeds? This exercise is futile as people try to change results or fruits but remain unaware of the causes. It is important to know the things one can change and what one cannot change readily.
What Is In My Realm?
We have to understand what is in our realm and what is not? When things happen according to our expectations, we say, “I did it!” But when they don’t, we pass the blame, saying things like, “What can I do?” “Circumstances were not favourable,” or “My partners made mistakes,” and so on.
For each occurrence to have a desirable outcome, many circumstantial evidences have to come together in a harmonious sequence. Even if a single evidence is lacking, it will not happen. But are we capable of controlling all circumstances?
Take the mind, for instance. We try to control our mind, but do we always succeed in stopping unwanted thoughts from coming into our mind?
The same applies to our speech. We may have decided to speak in a particular way, but after a while, our speech may come out differently and we may regret the words we had spoken. So, are we completely independent of inner as well as outer
Then what is within our realm? The only decision made with an ‘inner hearty resolution and projection’ is my relative independence.
One’s behaviour or personality is the effect, result or fruit of previous decisions or beliefs and hence may be difficult to change immediately. Only one’s understanding or vision can be changed. And this is what will change our opinion, decision and projection; these work as seeds or causes for future effects.
Values like compassion, peace and truth are only the effects of predetermined causes. Hence, we don’t expect or ask people to change their behaviour forcibly. But if we change people’s understanding or vision, it will lead to a change in inner opinion,
decision and resolution.
A change in behaviour will automatically follow. Life has two parts: one is a part of happenings and the other is the decision part of living as ‘I am’. Happenings involve gross to subtle, outer and inner circumstantial evidences which may not be in one’s independent control, while decision or projection is based on understanding, independent of circumstances, and one can exercise one’s relative free will here.
For example, I get angry with Mr Chandubhai. Internally, if I decide that my action was correct, then my mistake is reinforced. In contrast, if I apologise, resolve and ask for inner energy not to repeat the mistake, then I free myself of the burden.
Even when one has decided not to hurt anyone, someone might get hurt. But God takes your inner resolves into account and forgives you, because it’s the inner decision and hearty resolution which counts. Here one should seek forgiveness or do pratikramana, or divine process of confession, apology and resolution, within.
Sometimes, we decide to speak the truth and remain honest, but because of circumstances, fail at times.
For instance, we don’t blame Chandubhai, but we tender him an apology, do hearty pratikramana and ask for inner energy not to do such things again. If evil thoughts enter your mind, do not get disturbed, but do their ‘pratikramana’.
Present personality, behaviour, speech, and body are fruits or effects of previous beliefs and decisions while present understanding, decisions and projections are the seeds for your future personality.
This method of transformation can be explained even to a thief. We can explain the results of his misdeeds and the fear that prevents him to change his inner opinion. We can suggest that he prays for forgiveness and asks for pardon for his wrongdoings. He can ask for inner strength and circumstances so that he can refrain from doing wrong actions. Don’t curse him.
A man usually commits a theft, speaks lies, and becomes angry out of compulsion or when he cannot help the circumstances. If we annoy or interrupt him, he will react and say, “I will definitely do it again. Who are you to advise me? Mind your own business.” But if we explain things with love and affection, we will help him eradicate the root of the disease.
Forgiveness against anger, sincerity against crookedness, humility against arrogance are the weapons we have.
Correct understanding gives results. Such understanding comes from knowledge based on experience.
